May is ‘Stop the Bleed’ Month in Hays County, EMS Offers Training to Help Bystanders Save Lives

Hays County Courthouse, San Marcos, TX (May 2, 2019) – The Hays County Commissioners Court Tuesday proclaimed May as Stop the Bleed Month to call attention to the training that ordinary citizens can take to assist injured persons.

Stop the Bleed began as an initiative of the American College of Surgeons following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012. The program’s goal is to help bystanders assist injured persons in any type of emergency and potentially save lives by controlling life-threatening bleeding.

“We want to empower bystanders to save lives by teaching proper bleeding control techniques, such as use of pressure and tourniquets,” San Marcos/Hays County EMS Administrative Training Lieutenant Katie Contreras told the Court.

SMHCEMS is holding free classes during May to train individuals. For more information or to register, visit www.StoptheBleedSM.com  or contact kcontreras@smhcems.org.
