January 31 Property Tax Payment Deadline Approaches

Hays County Courthouse, San Marcos, TX (Jan. 20, 2020) – Hays County Tax Assessor-Collector Jenifer O’Kane reminds property owners that 2019 property taxes must be paid in full by Friday, January 31, 2020, to avoid penalties and interest.

“There are a variety of payment options available,” O’Kane pointed out. “And if you wait until the 31st, chances are you will find yourself in a crowd.”

Taxpayers can drop off a check in person or in the drop box at any of the Tax Assessor-Collector’s locations (Hays County Government Center and all four precinct offices); pay online on the Tax Collector’s website by using a credit/debit/e-check option (vendor fee applies); by mail at 712 S. Stagecoach Trail, Suite 1120, San Marcos, TX 78666 (mail-in payments are not accepted at precinct offices, and payments are credited as of the postmark date); and by phone at 1-888-546-4337 (credit/debit card vendor fee applies).

Beginning Saturday, February 1, seven (7) percent penalty and interest will be added to property accounts with outstanding balances. Taxpayers who are not able to pay the full amount by January 31 are encouraged to pay as much as possible so that they accrue as little as possible.

Persons who pay quarterly and have 65-or-older, disabled person, or disabled veteran tax exemptions and have made their first payment on or before January 31 are not assessed penalty and interest.

Questions about your property tax bill are answered by emailing Jenifer.okane@co.hays.tx.us or by calling the main office at 512-393-5545.
