Hays County Local Health Department (HCLHD) reports 75 new lab-confirmed cases along with one (1) new hospitalization and three (3) new hospital discharges. No additional people are considered recovered since Wednesday’s update. The total number of individuals considered recovered is 6,927. This week the health department removed 33 cases from the cumulative total; the reasons included duplicates, incorrect county, etc.
The total number of lab-confirmed cases is 8,091 with 1,057 of those considered active*. The number of active cases from just the past 21 days is 1,265. The number of probable cases is 958. The number of negative tests is 58,709.
Hays County has had 454 total hospitalizations and seven (7) people are currently hospitalized. According to Epidemiologist Eric Schneider, COVID-19 is still actively spreading in Hays County, though not unexpectedly. He recommended making alternative holiday plans and avoiding large group gatherings to help slow the spread.
“Staying apart from loved ones at Christmas is hard, but it’s better than spending New Year’s in the hospital,” he said.

*The Hays County Local Health Department contacts and follows up with every person who tests positive for COVID-19 to ensure they, or other household contacts, are not still contagious before moving them into the “Recovered” category. HCLHD does not clear people based on a calendar, because some individuals can be symptomatic and contagious for many weeks. Also, if a person has multiple family members who are household contacts, it is possible for the virus to last in that household for a period of months until everyone is symptom free.
