FM 2001 West Realignment Project

The FM 2001 West project from Sunbright Boulevard (in the Sunfield neighborhood of Buda) to the existing FM 2001 was developed as part of the Hays County 2016 Road Bond Program. The project includes a four-lane extension of FM 2001 along a new alignment from Sunbright Blvd to existing FM 2001 with a wide median, bike lanes, sidewalks, drainage improvements, signing and pavement markings. FM 2001 West was let for construction by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

The project is the first element of the overall FM 2001 expansion and realignment from Sunbright Boulevard to SH 21 to provide an upgraded, safer route to serve this rapidly-developing eastern portion of Hays County. Improvements include removing 90-degree turns, providing a realigned intersection with SH 21, and accommodating a future expansion to four lanes.

FM 2001 West opened to traffic on September 14, 2022. Since that time, Hays County received comments regarding speeding and the need for additional signage. The county is working with the TxDOT South Travis Area Office to review and evaluate these concerns. The TxDOT Area Office is working to have two 45 mph speed limit signs installed and a 45 mph advisory speed limit message board placed at the tie-in with old FM 2001 for travelers heading west. The county will conduct traffic counts at various locations to see to see if there is a need for traffic signalization in the FM 2001 West corridor.

Hays County and TxDOT ask for the public’s patience as these issues are resolved and needed improvements are implemented. Please continue to monitor this site for any updates.
