About the Regional Animal Shelter in San Marcos

Residents of Hays County are served by a Regional Animal Shelter located in San Marcos. The animal shelter is both the stray intake and rabies quarantine facility for all of Hays County, and is progressive about placing animals for adoption and rescue. The Animal Shelter Advisory Committee provides advice involving compliance with state laws that regulates the animal shelter and animal welfare.

Appointment requirements:

1 licensed veterinarian
1 city official
1 person whose duties include the daily operation of an animal shelter
1 representative from an animal welfare organization
1 resident of the city or the city’s extraterritorial jurisdiction
1 person appointed by the City of Kyle
1 person appointed by the City of Buda
1 person appointed by Hays County
*With the exception of the persons appointed by the County, Buda, and Kyle, the committee will be appointed by the city council for staggered terms of three years.

In addition to spay/neuter services, PALS through its Pet Pantry provides food for pets and keeps them in their homes. The Community Cat program provides assistance and classes for Trap-Neuter-Return-Maintain (TNRM). Humane Education program teaches kindness, pet care and responsibility to children.
