HCSO Types of Job Postings

Hays County Sheriff BadgeWe have three (3) positions that are permanent postings.

Deputy – you must have your Peace Officer License and be 21 years of age.

Corrections Officer – you must be 21 years of age or older to apply.

Emergency Communications Officer – You must be 18 year of age or older.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT TESTING

Testing listed below for each position is subject to change and by appointment only. Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) licensed applicants will be given two (2) opportunities to pass each level of pre-employment testing. After your second attempt, should you fail to pass you may reapply in six (6) months.

Deputy Required Testing Includes:

Physical Agility

  • Exiting a patrol car, sprint approximately 200 yards, negotiate an obstacle course, run/sprint 70 yards to the hand gun trigger pull exercise, complete five (5) trigger pulls with each hand

Passing- Completion pf Physical Agility test within three minutes and fifty seconds (3:50)

Typing

  • Minimum of 21 WPM

Report Writing

  • You have 45 minutes to complete the writing exam

General Knowledge Exam

Applicants will sit for a written exam of 100 questions divided into four timed sections. Test sections include:

  • Vocabulary with Spelling and Grammar,
  • Reading/Writing Comprehension/Deductible Reasoning,
  • Memorization and
  • Math/Critical Thinking

       Passing – Completion of exam with a score of 70 or above.

Corrections Officer

Physical Agility

After a period of instruction applicant must be able to:

  • Successfully load and chamber a semi-automatic pistol one time.
  • Within one minute and thirty seconds (1:30) time limit you must:
  • Run/sprint 100 yards, pick up, put on and carry a 30 pound air pack, drag a 165 pound dummy 10 yards, run/sprint 30 yards while carrying a fire hose, hand gun trigger pull exercise, complete five (5) trigger pulls with each hand.

Typing

  • Minimum of 15 WPM

General Knowledge Exam

Applicants will sit for a written exam of 50 timed questions. Test sections include:

  • Vocabulary,
  • Spelling,
  • Grammar,
  • Reading/Writing Comprehension and
  • Math/Critical Thinking

       Passing – Completion of exam with a score of 70 or above.

Emergency Communications Officer

Critical

Applicants will sit for a computer based exam.  Test sections include:

  • Memory Retention
  • Prioritization
  • Ability to Multi-Task and
  • Decision Making

        Passing – Completion of exam with a score of 70 or above.

Typing

Minimum of 30 WPM

Civilian

Applicants will sit for a general knowledge written exam of 50 timed questions.  You must pass with a score of 70 or above.

Depending on the position, pre-employment testing may include but are not limited to typing, physical agility, testing for vehicle maintenance, etc.

After your second attempt, should you fail to pass pre-employment testing you may reapply in six (6) months.
