Burn Ban Reinstated in Hays County 2-1-22

With no significant rainfall in six weeks and high winds predicted later this week, the Interim Hays County Fire Marshal, Gib Watt, today recommended reinstating the county’s burn ban. The Hays County Commissioners Court approved.

“I recommend that the burn ban be put in place, as fire danger is currently high,” Watt said. “The recent rains dampen the ground but do not affect the dry and dead fine fuels and grasses. An errant ember from an open burn could easily ignite these fuels and run for acres.”

Watt also referenced some recent grass fires around the region.

“We have seen relatively small grass fires in the county as well as our neighboring counties and a much larger fire in Bastrop County,” he said. “Burn bans are also currently in place for many of our neighboring counties including Blanco, Travis, and Caldwell.”

The county wide burn ban impacts the non-incorporated areas of Hays County.
