About Lon A. Shell

Hays County Commissioner, Precinct Three

Lon A. Shell is a local small business owner and was appointed Hays County Commissioner for Precinct Three in October 2017. Prior to his appointment as Commissioner, Lon served as Hays County’s Chief of Staff for seven years, where he worked closely with county leadership to coordinate major projects throughout the precinct, including disaster recovery in the wake of devastating flood events in recent years.

As Chief of Staff, Lon put his business background to work for Hays County, spearheading efforts to pass conservative budgets and adopt the county’s lowest tax rate in over 20 years. He also led the effort to develop and pass a tax freeze for senior citizens and improve countywide emergency communications.

During his time with the county, Lon developed a reputation for reducing bureaucratic wastefulness, improving public safety, providing transportation solutions to meet growing demands, and ensuring that tax dollars are spent with the utmost respect for those who pay them.

Lon also serves as President of the San Marcos Hays County EMS board, which provides life-saving emergency services to citizens throughout much of Hays County. Additionally, he serves on the Vision 2020 Steering Committee for the Greater San Marcos Partnership, a regional initiative to improve the entire Hays County economy through high quality job growth and successful small businesses.

Lon is married to Jennifer, his wife of 17 years, and together they have one daughter, Kathleen. Lon is a graduate of San Marcos High School and Texas A&M University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After working in Houston and Dallas in the engineered equipment industry, Lon returned to his native Hays County to raise his family, grow a small business, and be near his family’s farm and herd of Santa Gertrudis cattle. In his spare time, Lon enjoys spending time with his family, as well as hunting and fishing.
