Law Library

The Hays County Law Library is operated as a public service for residents of Hays County. The library is open and available to the general public and attorneys. The library is paid for through a portion of civil courts costs dedicated to the operation of the library, per Local Government Code §323.023. The library is strictly for legal research use.

Law Librarian

The Law Librarian can assist users in finding legal print or online resources. The Law Librarian cannot give legal advice, draft information, translate, or assist in filling out forms. Please do NOT email with requests for forms; Law Library staff cannot email forms. The public must come in to research and find the appropriate form needed for their situation.

Services
Effective June 1, 2021, The Law Library will offer the following services:

Two computers will be available, one computer for quick print and one computer for legal research.*

  • Legal research – Westlaw access, Texas Law Help, Texas Pattern Jury Charges – Family or County website only (up to 30 minutes only)
  • E-file – scanner and computer access (up to 30 minutes only)
  • Quick Print – a computer will be available to allow for printing only

*Only the person needing to use the computer will be allowed entry, or if the patrons require assistance, another person may enter.

Print resources will not be available – all print is accessible via Westlaw, including O’Connor’s titles.

Self-serve copier (cash or coin only) and printer; fees are $0.15 per page are available in the hallway.

Forms are readily available in the hallway for self-represented litigants looking for forms related to family law matters, including divorce, custody, child support, Hays County Standing Orders, and more.

Westlaw is temporarily available outside of the Law Library! Click here for more information to sign up for off-site access.

The Law Librarian will not assist patrons at the computers. The Law Librarian cannot tell you what forms to fill out or review your forms for accuracy. Patrons must conduct their research. Please refrain from using the computers for personal use, such as social networking sites, YouTube, music, or playing internet games.

The computers are for public use only; do not save any important or confidential files to the desktop or hard drive. Save all important documents to a flash drive or another storage device that you provide.

Fees
There is a public Xerox machine located in the law library that accepts cash or coins only.

Law Library Hours & Closures

Effective June 1, 2021
To reduce the spread of COVID-19 and protect patrons and staff’s health and safety, the Hays County Law Library will be open with restricted access. To access the Law Library, you will need to visit during posted hours for each week. The Law Library door will be locked. To enter the Law Library, ring the doorbell, and Law Library staff will meet you at the door. Staff will provide you with a visitor sheet to fill out. Law Library staff will post hours for the week outside of the Law Library and on the County website. Please read the services section on this page for information on current services and visit our other pages for research resources. Please note that patrons visiting the Law Library must remain in the restricted area and only access computers for legal research.

Public Hours – Self-represented litigants and attorneys (July 2021)*
Monday-Thursday: 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and Friday: Closed
Attorneys Only: Please visit the front desk of the Criminal District Attorney’s office to check out a key to the Law Library when it is closed. Key checkout is only available when the Law Library is closed and the building is open to the public, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

*There is only one part-time Law Librarian; availability may vary and differ from Library hours. Due to limited staffing, hours are subject to change without advance notice – apologies in advance for any inconveniences. The Law Library is a self-service Law Library.

All visitors must enter through the front entrance and go through security. Inside the Government Center, the Law Library is located on the second floor behind the staircase and next to the District Attorney’s office.
From IH-35: Take Exit 202/Wonder World Drive/RR 12 on the south side of San Marcos and turn west. Go over the railroad track overpass, and at the bottom, make an immediate right (north) on South Stagecoach Trail.
From Hunter Road/FM 2439: Turn east on Wonder World Drive/RR 12 toward I-35. Turn left (north) on the South Stagecoach Trail at the bottom of the railroad overpass.
