Juvenile Center Placement Information

Who We Are

The Hays County Juvenile Center is a 42,000 square foot pre- and post-adjudication secure correctional facility located at: 2250 Clovis Barker Rd., San Marcos, Texas.  The facility is operated by the Hays County Juvenile Board.  We have been providing residential services at this location since April 2002 and placement services since October 1995.  The residential services offered at the Hays County Juvenile Center are comprised of 34 pre-adjudication detention beds and 114 post-adjudication academy, SPRinG, mental health, substance abuse treatment and sex offender therapy beds. All programs are led by licensed mental health professionals and supervised by the Director of Counseling Services who is a Licensed Professional Counselor – Supervisor.

Post-adjudication Academy Program

The post-adjudication academy program (General Offender) serves adjudicated male offenders ages 13-17.  This program is generally 3-6 months in length and is comprised of 1 hour a week of individual counseling, 1 hour daily group counseling and family therapy as needed led by the Director of Counseling Services and one other Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW). A case manager also assists the Counselors in the provision of services as well. This program is designed to follow a 24 week (6 month) curriculum. Group therapy topics consist of anger management, social skills, mental health and HIV/AIDS awareness. They will also receive Drug and Alcohol educational classes provided by Hays Caldwell Council on Drug and Alcohol Abuse once a week. Counselors are responsible for supervising and arranging group counseling sessions, individual sessions, family sessions and coordinate contact with the probation departments.

Post-adjudication SPRinG Program (Supporting &Promoting Resilience in Girls)

The post-adjudication SPRinG program (Supporting & Promoting Resilience in Girls) serves adjudicated female offenders ages 13-17. This program is 6 months in length and is comprised of 1 hour a week of individual counseling, 1 hour daily group counseling, 1 hour family counseling a month lead by a Licensed Professional Counselor with a expertise in Trauma Informed Care, Female Offenders and Abuse. A case manager assists the Counselor in the provision of services as well. The female offender will also receive 1 hour per week of trauma based yoga led by a licensed yoga instructor. This program is designed to follow a 6 month curriculum covering topics such as Trauma and Abuse, Healthy Relationships, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Social Aggression and Mind/Body Relaxation. They will also receive Drug and Alcohol educational classes provided by Hays Caldwell Council on Drug and Alcohol Abuse once a week. This group will be limited to 12 juveniles at a time so space is limited for treatment. The Counselor is responsible for supervising and arranging group counseling sessions, individual sessions, family sessions and coordinate contact with the probation departments.

Post-adjudication Mental Health Program

The post-adjudication mental health program (MH) serves adjudicated male and female offenders ages 13-17 with a diagnosed mental health condition. This program offers specialized care provided by an LPC and LMSW to promote wellness by forming new coping skills to better handle their mental health issues and decrease offending behavior. Female offenders will be included in the SPRinG group (see above details). This program is implemented and supervised by the Director of Counseling Services, a LPC and a LMSW. A case manager assists the Counselors in the provision of services as well. Residents Receive 5-10 hours of individual, group, and family counseling per week. Counselors are responsible for supervising and arranging group counseling sessions, individual sessions, family sessions and coordinate contact with the probation departments.

Post-adjudication Substance Abuse Program (Juvenile Intensive Treatment Program)

The post-adjudication substance abuse program (JITP) serves adjudicated male and female offenders ages 13-17 with a diagnosed substance abuse or dependency problem.  This program is designed to follow a 24 week (six month) curriculum.  Residents receive a minimum of 10 hours of structured activity per week including 5 hours per week of chemical dependency counseling from two Licensed Master Social Workers.  Daily groups will consist of 50% Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and 50% Process Group which also integrates life skills and anger management.  Each counselor utilizes Evidence Based Practice (EBP) with their clients and evaluates progress during weekly individual sessions.  Additionally, residents participate in therapeutic groups, individual and family counseling.  Counselors supervise a caseload of no more than 16 residents.  The Counselors are responsible for supervising and arranging group counseling sessions, individual sessions, family sessions and coordinate contact with the probation departments.

Post-adjudication Sex Offender Therapy Program

The post-adjudication sex offender therapy program (SORT) serves male offenders ages 13-17 who have been adjudicated for a sex related offense.  This program is designed to be a six month program.  Residents receive 1 hour a week of individual counseling, 1 hour daily group counseling and family therapy as needed. Additionally, these residents receive instruction in anger management, social skills, drug/alcohol education, mental health and HIV/AIDS awareness.  Therapy is provided by a registered sex offender treatment provider for a minimum of 4 hours per week and supplemented through the services of a Licensed Professional Counselor.  Sex offender groups are comprised of no more than 8-10 residents.  Counselors are responsible for supervising and arranging group counseling sessions, individual sessions, family sessions and coordinate contact with the probation departments.

Education

Educational services are provided by the John H. Wood Jr. Charter School (BraiNation).  Residents are assessed upon admittance for grade placement and will receive TEA recognized credits for completed course work on a six week schedule.  Regular and Special Education services are available for all residents.  The John H. Wood Jr. Charter School has a principal, social work, school psychologist and Special Education coordinator available for appropriate services.  GED preparation and testing services are available upon request of the placing agency.

Medical/Dental/Psychiatric/Nutritional Services

Basic medical services are provided on site by two Licensed Vocational Nurses and two medical technicians.  The Hays County Juvenile Center is located within two miles of contracted doctors for routine medical needs and the Central Texas Medical Center for emergency situations. The Hays County Juvenile Center also contracts with a psychiatrist for those residents in need of continued or evaluative mental health services. Routine psychiatric services are provided bi-weekly on-site, and by appointment only off-site.

The Hays County Juvenile Center has an in-house kitchen that provides three meals and one snack per day.  All meals meet, or exceed, the minimum dietary allowances outlined by Texas Juvenile Probation Commission standards and the National School Lunch/School Breakfast Program. Recreational services are provided through three outdoor areas and an indoor gym.
